San Diego In 3 Days With A City Pass: Itinerary + Honest Worth-It Math (2026)

San Diego spreads across beach, bay, and park neighborhoods — without a plan you'll lose half a day in transit. We built this 3-day itinerary around the two passes that actually cover the city's headliners: Go City San Diego All-Inclusive (unlimited attractions for a set number of days) and San Diego CityPASS (a fixed bundle of five top sights). We priced every attraction individually in June 2026 and did the math so you don't have to. Bottom line first: a fast-paced 3-day visit using the Go City All-Inclusive Pass can save an adult $80–$100 vs gate prices — but only if you hit at least 3 major attractions per day.

Which San Diego Pass Works for a 3-Day Trip?

Three days is enough time to make either pass pay off — but only if you're structured about it. Before we get to the itinerary, here's a quick comparison of the passes available in 2026. See our full San Diego city pass comparison for the deep-dive, but this table gives you the essentials.

Pass Price (2026) Validity Type San Diego Zoo USS Midway SeaWorld Harbor Cruise Skip-the-Line Buy
Go City All-Inclusive From $89/adult (1-day); 3-day ~$169 1–10 consecutive days Unlimited time-based Most attractions Buy at Go City
Go City Explorer From $59/adult (2-attraction) 60 days from first use Choose 2–7 attractions ✓ (add-on) ✓ (add-on) ✓ (add-on) ✓ (add-on) Most attractions Buy at Go City
San Diego CityPASS $129/adult; $99/child (3–11) 9 consecutive days Fixed bundle (3 sights) Yes (included venues) Buy at CityPASS

Prices verified June 2026. Go City multi-day passes offer better per-day value; always check gocity.com for current rates before buying.

Worth-It Math: San Diego Pass vs. Gate Prices (2026)

Sponsored

We priced every major attraction at the gate in June 2026. Here's what a typical 3-day adult itinerary costs without a pass:

Attraction Gate Price (Adult, 2026)
San Diego Zoo$72
USS Midway Museum$32
SeaWorld San Diego$75 (standard online)
San Diego Harbor Cruise (1 hr)$30
LEGOLAND California$129
San Diego Zoo Safari Park$72
Old Town Trolley Tour$58
Total (all 7)$468

Scenario A: Active 3-Day Visitor (Zoo + Midway + SeaWorld + Harbor Cruise)

À-la-carte: $72 + $32 + $75 + $30 = $209
Go City All-Inclusive 3-day: ~$169
Verdict: Save ~$40 (19%) — pass wins. And with the All-Inclusive you can add LEGOLAND, the Safari Park, or the Trolley Tour at no extra cost. Add even one more attraction and savings jump to $100+.

Scenario B: CityPASS (Zoo + Midway + SeaWorld fixed bundle)

À-la-carte: $72 + $32 + $75 = $179
San Diego CityPASS: $129
Verdict: Save ~$50 (28%) — solid value if these three are your core priorities. CityPASS does not include the harbor cruise or LEGOLAND, so if you want those, the Go City All-Inclusive is a better fit.

Scenario C: Selective Traveler (only 2 attractions)

À-la-carte Zoo + Midway: $72 + $32 = $104
Go City Explorer (2-attraction): ~$59
Verdict: Save ~$45 — Explorer wins at slower pace. The Explorer Pass is the smart pick if you're doing 1–2 major sights per day and want 60 days of flexibility.

Buy it if: You're doing 3+ major paid attractions over 3 days. The Go City All-Inclusive 3-day at ~$169 beats gate prices by $40–$100+ depending on your lineup. The CityPASS at $129 is the cleaner deal if Zoo + Midway + SeaWorld are your exact three.

Skip it if: You plan to spend most of your time at free spots (beaches, Balboa Park grounds, Old Town State Historic Park), or you're only doing one or two paid attractions. Individual tickets will cost less. Also skip if you're visiting during "Kids Free October" promotions — check attraction websites first, as some months offer free child entry that makes a pass redundant for families.

3-Day San Diego Itinerary at a Glance

Sponsored

This itinerary is sequenced geographically — Day 1 in Balboa Park, Day 2 on the downtown waterfront, Day 3 in Old Town and coastal neighborhoods — so you're not bouncing across the city. We've built it around the Go City All-Inclusive as the primary pass; CityPASS holders should swap out the harbor cruise and LEGOLAND sections.

  • Day 1 — Balboa Park & the Zoo: San Diego Air & Space Museum → San Diego Zoo (afternoon) → Gaslamp Quarter dinner
  • Day 2 — Waterfront & Maritime: USS Midway Museum → 1-hour Harbor Cruise → La Jolla Cove (evening, free)
  • Day 3 — SeaWorld or Safari Park + Old Town: SeaWorld San Diego (morning) → Old Town State Historic Park (free, afternoon) → optional Old Town Trolley Tour

One scheduling rule that catches visitors off-guard: your Go City pass day activates at first scan and resets at midnight, not 24 hours later. Scan before 10 AM to get full value from each pass day.

Book in Advance: Reserve These Tickets Early

Sponsored

Most Go City and CityPASS attractions accept walk-ups, but a few require advance reservations even for pass holders. Book these before you arrive:

  • Old Town Tequila, Tacos & Tombstones Tour — typically sells out 48 hours ahead, especially weekends.
  • Speedboat Adventures — requires at least 3 days lead time; book at the point of purchase.
  • San Diego Zoo Safari Park — no advance booking required but arrive early; capacity gets tight on summer weekends.
  • SeaWorld San Diego — shows have set times; check the daily schedule and plan around Orca Encounter (once daily, ~3 PM in summer).

For the full list of what's covered on each pass, see our San Diego pass inclusions guide.

Day 1: Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo

Sponsored

Start early — the Zoo's animals are most active before noon and parking in Balboa Park fills by 10 AM. The Go City and CityPASS both include Zoo admission (gate price: $72/adult), so this is the single highest-value scan of your trip.

  • 9:00 AM: San Diego Zoo opens. Budget 3–4 hours minimum; the Africa Rocks and Australian Outback exhibits alone take 90 minutes. Skip the Skyfari aerial tram if crowds are light — use the time for animals instead.
  • 1:30 PM: Walk or tram to the adjacent Balboa Park museums. The San Diego Air & Space Museum ($26 gate, covered by Go City All-Inclusive) and the San Diego Museum of Art ($20 gate, also covered) are a 5-minute walk apart. Most museums here run 10 AM–5 PM.
  • 7:00 PM: Dinner in the Gaslamp Quarter, a 10-minute drive south. No pass needed — this neighborhood is all restaurants, bars, and street life.

Pass value today (Go City All-Inclusive): Zoo $72 + Air & Space $26 + Museum of Art $20 = $118 redeemed from a single day of your pass.

Day 2: USS Midway Museum and the Waterfront

Day 2 is waterfront-focused. The USS Midway is the most-visited naval aircraft carrier museum in the world — set aside 2.5–3 hours because 60+ exhibits across multiple decks take longer than most visitors expect. Gate price is $32/adult; both the Go City All-Inclusive and CityPASS include it.

  • 10:00 AM: USS Midway Museum opens on the Embarcadero (Navy Pier). Climb to the flight deck early before it gets hot in summer — the hangar deck exhibits are air-conditioned, so save those for midday.
  • 1:00 PM: Board a 1-hour harbor cruise from the Embarcadero (~$30 gate, included in Go City All-Inclusive; not in CityPASS). Good views of the downtown skyline and Naval Station. CityPASS holders can skip this or buy separately.
  • 4:30 PM: Drive 15 minutes north to La Jolla Cove. Entry is free — park on Coast Blvd and walk down. The sea caves at low tide are worth the detour. Optional: Birch Aquarium at Scripps (Go City All-Inclusive included, gate $24).

Pass value today (Go City All-Inclusive): Midway $32 + Harbor Cruise $30 + Birch Aquarium $24 = $86 redeemed.

Day 3: SeaWorld San Diego and Old Town

Sponsored

SeaWorld is 10 minutes from downtown via I-8. Gate price is around $75/adult online (higher at the gate); both the Go City All-Inclusive and CityPASS include admission. The park opens at 10 AM; arrive before 9:45 to beat the first-ride queue at Electric Eel.

  • 9:45 AM: SeaWorld San Diego. Check the daily schedule for Orca Encounter (typically once daily, ~3 PM) — if that's a priority, plan your morning around getting there by 2:30 PM for a good seat. Budget 4–5 hours total.
  • 3:30 PM: Old Town San Diego State Historic Park (free). Adobe buildings, working blacksmiths, and the Whaley House (ghost tour optional, ~$20 gate) are 8 minutes by car. The state historic park itself has no admission charge.
  • 5:30 PM: Optional Old Town Trolley Tour ($58 gate, Go City All-Inclusive included) — the hop-on/hop-off route loops through downtown, Gaslamp, and the Embarcadero over 2 hours.

Pass value today (Go City All-Inclusive): SeaWorld $75 + Trolley $58 = $133 redeemed. 3-day running total: ~$337 redeemed vs ~$169 paid — saves ~$168.

Families with kids should check our San Diego city pass for families guide — child pricing on the CityPASS ($99) and Go City can meaningfully change the math, especially for parties of four.

If You Have a 4th Day: LEGOLAND or the Safari Park

Sponsored

The Go City All-Inclusive is sold in 1–10 day increments — if you extend to a 4-day pass, two options stand out:

  • LEGOLAND California (Carlsbad, 30 min north): Gate price $129/adult. Families with kids under 12 rate this as the best value add-on in the Go City San Diego lineup. Buy a 4-day Go City instead of a 3-day and LEGOLAND is effectively free.
  • San Diego Zoo Safari Park (Escondido, 35 min north): Gate price $72. A completely different wildlife experience from the Zoo — open savannah exhibits with giraffes, rhinos, and lions in semi-wild settings. The Africa Tram is included with park admission.

Note: LEGOLAND and the Safari Park are drive-only from downtown San Diego (no direct public transit). Factor in parking ($25 at LEGOLAND, free at Safari Park).

Go City vs. CityPASS San Diego: Quick Verdict

Sponsored

We cover this in full detail in our Go City vs. CityPASS San Diego comparison, but the short version for a 3-day trip:

  • Go City All-Inclusive 3-day (~$169) — best for active sightseers doing 3+ attractions/day. The only pass that includes the harbor cruise, LEGOLAND, and the Safari Park.
  • San Diego CityPASS ($129) — best if Zoo + Midway + SeaWorld are your definite three and you want the lowest upfront price. Saves ~$50 vs gate. No flexibility outside the fixed bundle.
  • Go City Explorer ($59+ for 2 attractions) — best for relaxed travelers who'll do 1–2 major sights per day alongside free beaches and parks.

Where to Stay for a 3-Day Sightseeing Trip

Sponsored

Your base matters for transit time. The best options by neighborhood:

  • Gaslamp Quarter / East Village: Closest to the Embarcadero (Day 2), trolley access to Old Town, walkable nightlife. Mid-range hotels from ~$180–$220/night in summer.
  • Mission Valley / Hotel Circle: 10-minute drive to Balboa Park, 15 minutes to downtown. Best value at $100–$150/night. No walkability but easy highway access to LEGOLAND and the Safari Park.
  • La Jolla: Beautiful, quiet, ocean-view. Add 25–30 minutes transit to each downtown attraction. Better for a relaxed trip than a pass-heavy 3-day sprint.

Tip: San Diego's trolley Blue Line runs Gaslamp → Old Town in about 15 minutes and costs $2.50/ride via the PRONTO app. For Balboa Park (Day 1) and the waterfront (Day 2), you'll likely want a car or rideshare. Budget ~$20–$30/day for parking at major attractions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3 days enough time for San Diego?

Yes — three days covers the main paid attractions (Zoo, USS Midway, SeaWorld) and leaves time for free highlights like La Jolla Cove and Old Town State Historic Park. You'll feel slightly rushed at the Zoo; if wildlife is a priority, build in a 4th day for the Safari Park. Four days is the relaxed version; three days works if you start early each morning.

Which San Diego pass is best for a 3-day trip?

For an active 3-day trip, the Go City All-Inclusive 3-day pass (~$169/adult) offers the most value — it covers Zoo ($72), USS Midway ($32), SeaWorld ($75), the Harbor Cruise ($30), and more. If you're only doing Zoo + Midway + SeaWorld, the San Diego CityPASS at $129 saves about $50 vs gate prices with a simpler fixed-bundle format. Avoid the defunct Sightseeing Pass (bankrupt June 2025).

How much does a San Diego city pass cost in 2026?

San Diego CityPASS is $129/adult, $99/child (ages 3–11) for a fixed bundle of three attractions. Go City All-Inclusive starts at ~$89 for a 1-day pass and ~$169 for a 3-day pass. Go City Explorer starts at ~$59 for two attractions. See our San Diego city pass price guide for the current full pricing table.

Does the San Diego pass skip the line?

Yes — both Go City and CityPASS provide skip-the-ticket-window access at most included attractions. You scan the pass QR code at the entrance. The San Diego Zoo, USS Midway, and SeaWorld all honor this. Some smaller included venues may not have a separate pass lane; check the Go City app the day before.

Do I need a car in San Diego with a city pass?

A car helps but isn't essential for this 3-day plan. The MTS trolley covers downtown, Old Town, and the Gaslamp Quarter (Blue and Orange lines, $2.50/ride). Day 2's USS Midway and harbor cruise are walkable from each other. You'll want a car or rideshare for Day 1 (Balboa Park/Zoo) and Day 3 (SeaWorld). LEGOLAND and the Safari Park are drive-only from downtown.

Three days in San Diego is genuinely enough to see the highlights — if you sequence the days right and pick the pass that matches your pace. The Go City All-Inclusive 3-day earns back its price by Day 2 on this itinerary. The CityPASS is the lower-risk bet if Zoo + Midway + SeaWorld are your confirmed three. Either way, book any tour-based attractions at least 48 hours ahead, scan your pass before 10 AM each morning, and leave room for La Jolla — it's free and worth it.
